Structured Products in a Portfolio of Retail In...

Are structured products a good investment alternative for a retail investor from a theoretical point of view? The research presented in this book aimes at answering this question. Econometrical analysis of structured products shows interesting characteristics towards asymmetry of the return distribution of the products. Skewness, which is the measure of asymmetry of distribution, is much higher for structured products than it is for e.g. stocks. However, if portfolios of retail investors are to be constructed according to the traditional portfolio theory, skewness does not play any role, and structured products would not be of much interest to the investors. This book investigates whether skewness is in fact an important factor for an investor, how it can be incorporated in the theoretical framework of portfolio analysis and additionaly it presents a discussion of whether structured products can and should be viewed as an independent asset class in the portfolio of a retail investor.

Investor Behavior in the Market for Bank-issued...

This work investigates the trading behavior of retail investors in the largest European market place for bank-issued structured products - the European Warrant Exchange (EUWAX). Structured products are designed to grant retail investors access to a broad range of risk-return combinations, ranging from conservative investment products to high-risk leverage products. The focus of the analysis is on the question, how retail investors react to new information and which sources are taken into account when speculating and investing. The key finding is that retail investors actively trade on information, but their trading behavior exhibits various behavioral biases and irrational trading patterns such as herding, overconfidence as well as excessive optimism and risk-taking. In sum, the informational efficiency of retail investor trading in structured products is limited, which underscores the demand for increased efforts by policy makers and financial institutions to improve the financial literacy of retail investors.

The development of index management

As a change in current investment strategies to passive investments is discernible, there is a need to highlight the underlying instruments of investments products as they complete the full range of investment products like passive- and exchange traded funds, certificates and derivatives. Whereas the modern literature aims highly on covering index usability with regards to derivatives, the development of principle concepts concerning index construction over time as well as their impact on the financial industry, besides increasing volumes held by products replicating indices, are scarcer highlighted. Their increasing importance with regards to referred capital in financial products is incontestable and the explicit regulations carried out the last years concerning benchmarks illustrate the common sense that indices have reached the broad private investor base through various investment products.

Rational Investing

Many investors believe that success in investing is either luck or clairvoyance. In Rational Investing, finance professor Hugues Langlois and asset manager Jacques Lussier present the current state of asset management and clarify the conundrum of luck versus skill. The core of Rational Investing is a framework for smart investing built around three performance drivers: balancing exposure to risk factors, efficiently diversifying bad luck, and taking advantage of relative mispricings in financial markets. With clear examples from model multi-asset-class portfolios, Langlois and Lussier show how to implement performance drivers like institutional investors with access to extensive resources, as well as nonprofessional investors who are constrained to small-scale transactions. There are few investment products, whether traditional or alternative, discretionary or systematic, fundamental or quantitative, whose performance cannot be analyzed through this framework. Langlois and Lussier illuminate the structure of financial markets and the mechanics of sustainable investing so any investor can become a rational player, from the nonprofessional investor with a basic knowledge of statistics all the way to seasoned investment professionals wishing to challenge their understanding of the asset management industry.
